Dean Collins - Web Developer

My Work

I do a lot of back-end connectivity programming. This type of work does not easily lend itself to a portfolio. If I do my job well, no one ever knows that I've done anything because everything works. Also, a large part of my work has been on password protected web based applications. As a general rule, clients aren't particularly keen on me giving out user accounts just to show off my work. Here are a few projects that are viewable by the general public:

Trinity Technologies

Trinity Technologies is a document and information management consulting and systems integration company. designwise recoded the site for search engine optimization (SEO). I was asked to developed an automated navigation system, site map and bread crumb trail that would integrate into the flat XHTML files.

Using PHP to make calls directly to the server, I was able to deliver a solution that required only minimal changes to the files.

Buskerdoo

Buskerdoo sells cd sleeves, labels and mailers. The goals for Buskerdoo's site include:

  • Promoting Buskerdoo's products.
  • An on-line store to sell products directly to the public.

designwise created the fun look and feel for the site and handled the search engine optimization (SEO). I was asked to deliver a custom ecommerce solution to match.

The ecommerce software that I decided to use was osCommerce. It's an Open Source ecommerce solution based on PHP and MySQL. The version that was then available used HTML tables for layout and lacked features that Buskerdoo needed. I rewrote the PHP display routines so they would output valid XHTML and reference the stylesheet (css) that designwise had created. I also added several features that are unique to Buskerdoo's store. To see the difference, compare the base osCommerce application with Buskerdoo's store.

Pit Bull

Pit Bull manufactures high-quality, American-made stands and accessories for racing motorcycles. Pit Bull's products are used by the world's top motorcycle racers. The goals for Pit Bull's site include:

  • Promoting Pit Bull's products.
  • An on-line store to sell products directly to the public.
